BIM
Building Information Modeling
BIM technology is used to create a virtual model of the building. This model helps to check and eliminate any interferences that would have arised during the actual construction phase.

New Construction at Georgia Tech, Built with BIM Model

BIM technology has been quite helpful for Georgia Tech college, in renovating a part of it and transforming it into a state-of-the-art campus.

Georgia Tech's College for Architecture has unveiled a restoration work that has done for a whopping $9.5 million. The process is done for adaptive and rehabilitation reuse of the renowned Hinman Research Building through a grand opening ceremony on January 12, 2011. This historic building was designed in the year 1939 by the renowned architect P.M. Heffernan. In a recent process of renovation, This 35,000-sq.ft. building has undergone a total face lift process done collaboratively by 'Historic Preservation Studio' and 'Lord, Aeck'. The USP of this project is its implementation of BIM modeling. The Beck Group was the construction manager of the project.

Hinman Building's typical mid-century structure and materials demanded special care while, the renovation work was going on. The building had Georgia Tech Engineering Experiment area in it. This has now become Georgia Tech Research Institute. The new space, built following BIM structure, accommodates graduate level studios for architecture, interdisciplinary research labs, computer labs, galleries and platforms for big events, planning labs and high-fidelity simulation and administrative offices.

According to Jack Pyburn, FAIA, the principal of this project, a thoughtful conservation of materials, other exterior and interior features has preserved the legacy of Heffernan's functionalism. Moreover, the main concrete or steel constructions were retrofitted in a LEED Gold sustainability standard.

The interior part of the Hinman Building was reconstructed with architecturally and historically significant features that future programmatic needs can be met easily. A didactic balance between the future and past is created for the architectural education in Georgia Tech, through BIM modeling.

Building Information Modeling or (BIM) has been successfully used to preserve this historic building. Moreover, the Beck Group has converted the architectural BIM model into a construction model. Laser scan incorporated BIM model of the space is adopted to achieve the project design at a nominal budget and time schedule. Apart from that, Beck also created some intelligent models for supporting the fabrication, installation of architectural mill-work. After the of project is over, Beck provided a complete model for the building tat also included facility management functionalities. These models helped Georgia Tech in monitoring the performance of this new building, over the time.

In the words of Nader Tehrani, the lead designer of the project, the relationship between the new elements within the historic framework and High-bay is calibrated with precision. Thanks to the BIM structuring, the new structure has, in fact, imparted a complete new meaning to the old one.

Fred Perpall, the managing director in Eastern Division in The Beck Group said that this momentous project offered the constructors a chance to demonstrate their skill of advanced BIM skills. This will, in fact, add value to the entire construction procedure. The new building was opened on Jan. 12, 2011.
No entry fee was levied for the event. Visitors just enjoyed a tour through the building, met the construction and architecture team and enjoyed an exhibition with the detailing. The guests will be able to have a look at the advanced technology like, BIM procedure adopted in the construction process of the new building.
