The construction industry has ushered in a wonderful concept of BIM, but almost half the people in the construction world are still unaware of the benefits, this service can yield.
NBS has conducted a survey among the professionals involved in construction industry. The survey reveals a shocking fact that the industry needs detailed knowledge about BIM as this is a service that can totally change the face of the built environment industry. The industry's limited adoption of BIM services in a limited way can bog down the fast growth of this industry as the construction industry is moving towards achieving a new height. This data came to light just days after the chief construction and advisor for the government, Paul Morrell along with the Innovation and Growth Team in Department for Innovation, Business and Skills promoted the low carbon idea in building industry. Government is concerned about adopting BIM modeling for more and more projects.
According to the result of that survey, 70% among the people surveyed believe that BIM is going to be the future of the Building information industry. The funniest part is, 60% of them believe that the industry is yet to get a clear idea about what BIM is. Almost two-thirds (63%) of those think of using it for most of the projects in less than 5 years. At present only 10% of the people surveyed, use BIM in majority of the projects.
People who have already adopted BIM services have a pretty much clear idea about BIM. Around 53% say that introducing BIM services has increased profitability and around 81% agree on the fact that it has added to productivity (for fast retrieval of information). Despite working in the field of construction, nearly half of the professionals included in the survey, admit knowing nothing about the application of BIM. Around 43% of the professionals admitted of currently not using BIM. The largest impediment on the way towards the adoption of BIM modeling service is a prevailing idea that implementation of BIM means huge expenditure.
The head of BIM at NBS, Dr Stephen Hamil explained, while commenting on the survey that, the survey points at a clear division in the industry, where half of the surveyed lot admit that they simply have no knowledge of what BIM is. If Mr. Paul Morrell's comments should be followed, the situation is quite alarming for public procurement. The other half of the lot have information about what BIM is and are eager to implement it in their projects. As a result, the construction industry is being bifurcated into a two tier industry. As a result, many companies will be derived of the benefits of BIM modeling.
Dr Hamil expresses concern that the industry is moving towards an illusion that 3D CAD is all what BIM is, while it is much more than mere 3D modeling. Dr. Hamil adds, it is something beyond geometric information of a CAD model.
